01/ Overview
The route
Winter hiking in high mountain country amid the glacier world of Saas-Fee – that's the theme of this short route linking Felskinn mountain station and the Britannia Hut. The winter hiking trail is usually groomed from the end of February, when the Britannia Hut is open.
The roughly six-kilometre winter hike through the rocky high mountains above Saas-Fee begins at the Felskinn stop. Within the first kilometre, the route climbs to its highest point at around 3,070 m. It lies in the vicinity of Hinter Allalin, although the summit itself is not reached. The circuit then descends significantly, with expanses of glacier and dark rocky ridges defining the austere landscape. In total, the route involves around 500 metres of ascent and descent.
Around the halfway point, Klein Allalin lies to one side of the route. The lowest section is followed by a longer counter-ascent. The winter hiking trail then continues to gain elevation, reaching Egginerjoch in its final section, the only pass directly on the route. From there, the circuit leads back to Felskinn through high terrain shaped by rock and glaciers. After just over three hours, it ends back at the Felskinn stop.
