01/ Overview
The route
Far away from the hustle and bustle of ski tourism, it is a delight to enjoy the peacefulness of the Alpine Saas region on the Mattmark winter hiking trail. It leads up to the impressive Mattmark dam, a memorial to modern history.
From the village square in Saas-Almagell, the winter hike initially leads through the village before continuing up the valley into open terrain. The 14-kilometre route involves around 540 metres of ascent, with the long climb accounting for most of the outward journey. As the route gains altitude, the houses are left behind and the broad expanses of the upper Saastal dominate the landscape.
About halfway along the route, it reaches its highest point at just over 2,200 m near the Schwarzbergchopf. Here lies the Mattmark reservoir at the southern end of the Saastal. Its water is used to generate electricity by driving the turbines of the Mattmark power plants. After the turning point, the return route leads back down the valley, steadily losing altitude. Shortly before the village square, the route passes Mattmarkblick and ends back in Saas-Almagell after a good four and a half hours.
