01/ Overview

The route

This path was laid out in honour of the writer Carl Zuckmayer, and it recalls the man who was once Saas-Fee's most famous resident. The hike takes you through the forests above this mountain village, interspersed with many clearings.

It is only a few steps from the Saas-Fee, Atlantic bus stop to the starting point in Obere Wildi. The winter hike initially passes the houses and skirts Alp-Hitta. The route soon enters the forest and climbs gently out of the village. The first clearings appear between the trees before meadows and pastures come to dominate the landscape.

The circuit gains around 240 metres in elevation in a wide arc. After about three kilometres, it reaches its highest point near Mällig at just over 2'000 m; the Alpenblick restaurant lies beside the trail shortly afterwards. From here, the route descends again towards Saas-Fee. Open areas alternate with forest, while further down the village houses draw closer. The final section leads through the residential area back to Obere Wildi, where the starting point is reached again after around five kilometres and just under two hours.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
