01/ Overview
The route
A chapel, beautiful bridges and a magical winter forest – this is what the Zermatt circular trail has to offer. Crossing the spectacular Findelbach bridge is among this circular trail's highlights. Spanning the Findelbach river, it has a length of 93 metres and a height of 50 metres.
From Zermatt railway station, it is only a few steps to the start of this seven-kilometre winter hike. The route leads through the narrow streets past the Church of St Mauritius before climbing out of the village. It continues between houses and forest towards Zum See; the chapel of the same name lies slightly off the route.
Beyond Zum See, the ascent continues. The Blatten restaurant stands directly beside the trail, after which the route is characterised by woodland and open meadows. With gentle ups and downs, it gains a total of around 280 metres in elevation. After just over an hour and a half, the highest point is reached near Bielti at around 1,760 m.
The route now descends back towards Zermatt. The forest gradually gives way to the first houses, and at Le Mazot the village is reached once more. The winter hiking trail leads through the residential area to the starting point; after just over two hours, Zermatt railway station is again only a few steps from the finish.
