01/ Overview

The route

A nearly level circuit along the largely undeveloped shores of Hallwilersee, with swimming breaks, open woodland and Hallwyl Castle as the cultural highlight.

From Mosen railway station, it is only a few steps to Hallwilersee. The broad hiking trail follows the western shore northwards, mostly across open meadows and through short stretches of woodland. The largely undeveloped shoreline offers frequent opportunities for swimming breaks and unobstructed views across the lake. Near Birrwil, the Reformed village church stands above the route; shortly afterwards, the Rundblick Hallwilersee viewpoint invites a stop.

At Boniswil, the route reaches its highest point at around 470 m. It then continues to the northern end of the lake and Hallwyl Castle. This important moated castle stands on two islands in the Aabach and is part of Museum Aargau. A reconstructed pile dwelling adds another point of interest to this cultural landscape near the shore.

The route heads south again along the eastern shore via Tennwil. The trail remains close to the water almost throughout, alternating between meadows, woodland and the villages by the lake before reaching Aesch towards the end. After a little over five hours, the circuit closes at Mosen railway station.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
