01/ Overview
The route
In contrast to the well-viewed Botta church at Alpe Foppa, below the Monte Tamaro, the Monti di Medeglia - unknown and an insiders’ tip. Nowhere else will you get such direct views into south and north Ticino.
The 21-kilometre hike begins at Cap. Tamaro at around 1,850 metres, the highest point on the route. The starting point is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Alpe Foppa, is just over a kilometre away. Mountain paths lead down through open pastures and woodland to Alpe Foppa. Standing directly beside the trail is the Santa Maria degli Angeli chapel, designed by Mario Botta and built of concrete and porphyry.
The long descent then continues via Soresina to Rivera. In the valley, the character of the route changes abruptly: a long climb back up demands further effort. The mountain path ascends mainly through woodland before finally reaching the rocky terrain of Cima di Medeglia.
The route descends again via Canedo and Drossa. After around seven hours and a total ascent of 900 metres, the hike ends in Medeglia. The Medeglia, Paese bus stop is just a few steps from the finish.
