01/ Overview
The route
On this long stage, the change from Ticino's riparian landscape to the mountain scenery with arrival in the town of Locarno is impressive, as is the stretch between the historic village of Corippo and Mergoscia.
From the Lavertezzo, Paese bus stop, the trail leads through the village and continues down the valley. At Corippo, it passes the church of Santa Maria del Carmine; shortly afterwards, Lago di Vogorno comes into view, created by the damming of the Verzasca. The route continues to climb through extensive woodland and across open slopes via Mergoscia.
Beyond the halfway point, the trail narrows and takes on the character of a mountain path. The hike reaches its highest point at around 1,100 metres. The route then descends through woodland and scattered settlements, accompanied for one section by the Navegna. Towards Locarno Monti, the wooded slopes increasingly give way to built-up areas. At the Madonna del Sasso viewpoint, the city comes into sight. The final descent leads to Locarno and close to the shore of Lago Maggiore, where the Locarno, lago bus stop is located. Just over seven hours should be allowed for the approximately 21 kilometres with around 1,100 metres of ascent.
