01/ Overview

The route

A thrilling hike to the prehistoric Castelliere castle ruins above Tegna, with spectacular views of Lake Maggiore, the Centovalli and extending as far as Italy. Past the impressive Orrido Gorge, you follow the Maggia to Ponte Brolla.

From the Ponte Brolla stop, the hike initially leads through the houses and soon passes Grotto America. Beyond it begins the mountain trail marked in white, red and white. It climbs into the forest, quickly gaining height. After just over two kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at around 530 m.

The trail now descends through the wooded slope towards Tegna. Meadows and bright clearings repeatedly open up among the trees before the route crosses the village. It then continues with alternating ascents and descents; the total ascent amounts to around 460 metres. The Oratorio di S. Anna stands directly beside the trail.

Towards the end, the open areas become broader and the first houses of Verscio draw closer. After six kilometres and just over two hours, the hike ends in the village; the Verscio stop is only a few steps away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
