01/ Overview

The route

The last stage of the Swiss Tour Monte Rosa begins on the second section of the Europaweg trail. The hike runs along challenging paths that are carved into the rock in parts, through tunnels and galleries and over bridges.

The route begins at the Europahütte, away from public transport; Randa railway station is around 2 km away. The mountain trail, marked in white-red-white, initially crosses open terrain before continuing between forest and rocky slopes. With constant ascents and descents, the trail heads up the valley, involving around 1,000 metres of ascent.

After a good three hours, the route reaches Ottafe and the Täschalp Restaurant & Lodge, located directly beside the trail. Beyond this point, the surroundings become more barren once again. The mountain trail continues to climb, reaching the highest point near Bösentrift at around 2,350 m after just under five hours. From here, views open up towards the Matterhorn.

Shortly afterwards, the route passes the Tufternhütte. The long descent now begins, initially across open slopes and through forest, then towards the end along a broader hiking trail to the first houses of Zermatt. After 20 kilometres and just under seven hours, the tour ends near Zermatt railway station, having descended a total of around 1,650 metres.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
