01/ Overview

The route

The 5-Lakes Trail is an extraordinary hiking path in the mountains of Zermatt. The Matterhorn is reflected in three of the mountain lakes and the view of the towering peaks is awe-inspiring. The trail connects the Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee and Leisee lakes.

From Blauherd station, the mountain trail crosses open, rocky slopes towards Stellisee. The lake lies directly on the route and is renowned for its reflection of the Matterhorn. The trail then climbs again. After around two kilometres, it reaches its highest point at just over 2'600 m near Unterrothorn; a little later, it passes Fluhalp.

The long descent now begins. The route sweeps downhill in a broad arc across alpine pastures and stony slopes, mostly following the white-red-white marked mountain trail. Farther down, the terrain becomes gentler, and the first stretches of woodland break up the open landscape. After about three-quarters of the route, the hiking trail leads directly to Mosjesee.

The first houses appear at Bord. Passing the Paradies mountain restaurant, the trail climbs gently once more and reaches Leisee shortly before the destination. From its shore, only the final stretch to Sunnegga and the nearby Sunnegga (Breitboden) station remains.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
