Via Engiadina, Stage 5/12

You cross over the border from the Lower Engadine to the Upper Engadine in the wild Val Punt Ota. Narrow paths run along the slope through coniferous forests and across wide pastures. The view sweeps across the valley and the mountain peaks of the national park. Solid stone walls, round arches and ornate facades catch the eye in Zuoz.

From Zuoz station, the hike initially leads through the village, passing Tuor Planta and the listed Reformed Church of San Luzi. The mountain trail then climbs steadily across open slopes. After just over three kilometres, the route reaches its highest point near Piz Griatschouls at around 2,050 metres. Here, the long initial ascent comes to an end.

The trail now descends again and leads to Chapella. Standing directly on the route is the complex of the former Church of St Ulrich and Nicholas with its hospice; the site is listed as a Swiss cultural property of national significance. The hike continues towards Brail between meadows and woodland. Beyond the village, there are longer stretches through forest as the trail heads east in gentle undulations.

The final third is predominantly downhill. Forest and open meadows alternate before the first houses of Zernez come into view. After a total of just over five hours, the route ends directly at Zernez railway station.
