01/ Overview
The route
Tour from Samedan in the unspoilt Val Champagna. The challenging climb has its rewards: first, the natural beauty of Lej Muragl, and a unique view across the Upper Engadine lake landscape at Muottas Muragl. Do you fancy a trail run? This route is ideal.
From Samedan railway station, this long circular hike initially leads out of the village. After a gentle start, the trail climbs through forest and across open slopes. Before long, it becomes a white-red-white waymarked mountain trail, with the ascent dominating much of the route. Just under seven hours should be allowed for the 18 kilometres and around 1,200 metres of ascent.
In the rocky terrain near Fuorcla Val Champagna, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,820 m. Shortly afterwards, Lej Muragl lies a little off the route. Scree and barren mountain slopes shape the landscape around the pass.
The mountain trail then descends towards Muottas Muragl. The summit itself lies off the route, but the trail passes the mountain restaurant of the same name. Near Muottas Muragl, views open up across the Upper Engadin and its lakes. A long descent leads across open pastures and through forest back to Samedan. The final kilometres once again follow an easy hiking trail and end at the railway station.
