01/ Overview
The route
The trail follows the Rhine along old fishing paths before crossing the Hardwald recreation area. Then comes a highlight of railway history: the Muttenz marshalling yard, one of the largest in Europe. The Bienenberg affords wonderful views across the Ergolztal valley.
The roughly 20-kilometre hike begins at Basel SBB railway station. The route passes through Basel neighbourhoods to St. Alban Pfalz, then briefly follows the Rhine. Meadows and pastures open up between the settlements. The well-marked hiking trail continues towards Muttenz on gentle inclines.
There, the fortified church of St. Arbogast stands directly on the route. It is the only church in Switzerland enclosed by an almost circular defensive wall. The trail then climbs to Wartenberg. Three medieval castle ruins dominate the ridge; the central tower serves as a viewpoint.
The route continues through woodland and across open terrain to the highest point of the hike. Near Schauenburgflue, it reaches an elevation of around 580 metres. The trail then descends via Bienenberg to Liestal. After a good five hours, the hike ends directly at the railway station.
