01/ Overview
The route
A short hike out of the big city of Basel, along a medieval canal and the banks of the Birs, past Switzerland's largest football stadium and the Reinacher Heide nature reserve. Experience how nature is given space in a settlement area.
From Basel SBB railway station, this roughly 14-kilometre hike initially leads through the city into the St. Alban valley. Before long, the St. Alban-Teich takes the lead, its waters accompanying the broad hiking trail as far as St. Jakob. St. Jakob church stands directly on the route. It was built before 1100 in honour of the apostle James the Greater. A fresco and a commemorative plaque on the outside wall recall the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs in 1444.
Beyond St. Jakob, the scenery changes. Meadows open up between the edges of the surrounding settlements, and the trail later passes through the Däntsche forest. The level terrain and consistently waymarked route make for relaxed progress. Towards the end, the Einschlag fire pit offers a place to stop for a break.
On the final section, the route meets the Birs and follows it towards Aesch. The destination, at around 310 m, is also the highest point of the hike. After just over three hours, the trail ends near the Aesch BL, Bahnhofstrasse stop.
