01/ Overview
The route
Shortly after the Dazio Grande, you reach the Piottino-Schlucht gorge, one of the ViaGottardo's key passages. Countless structures are found along the entire section. Faido and Chiggiogna are the most important towns.
The approximately 13-kilometre hike begins at the Rodi, Casa Gendotti bus stop. Soon after the start, the route reaches its highest point at around 950 metres. From there, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads predominantly downhill. Open meadows, stretches of woodland and short uphill sections provide variety. Along the way, the railway line comes into view at the Ferrovia S. Gottardo viewpoint.
After just over a third of the route, the trail reaches Faido. It passes between the houses and by the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea, with an osteria right next door. The village is soon left behind as the route continues through the valley. Settlements alternate with green stretches while the cumulative descent gradually increases.
The route continues via Chiggiogna towards Nivo. Near the end, the trail descends once more and reaches Lavorgo after just over three and a half hours. The Lavorgo stop is only a few steps from the finishing point.
