Trans Swiss Trail, Stage 27/32

The most romantic but steepest section of the Strada alta trail. The old mule trail leads over rocky spurs and through tranquil chestnut forests to the unique open-air steps above Pollegio. A spurt to the finish at Biasca down in the Leventina Valley.

From the Anzonico, Paese bus stop, the mountain trail leads out of the village and gradually gains height. Woodland alternates with open meadows and small settlements. In Segno, the route passes the Oratorio di Sant’Ambrogio, construction of which began in the 13th century. Via Cavagnago and Sobrio, the trail continues uphill.

At Parnasco, the hike reaches its highest point at around 1,150 metres. A long descent then defines the remainder of the route. The narrow mountain trail runs mostly through woodland, interspersed with clearings and small hamlets. Via Bidrè, Diganengo and Corecco, the route steadily loses height without relinquishing its tranquil, rural character.

By Pollegio, most of the descent has been completed. The trail now becomes easier and leads through more densely populated areas to Biasca. After 18 kilometres and just over five hours, the hike ends near Biasca railway station.
