01/ Overview
The route
If you are in the mood for hiking upstream, this is the perfect walk for you. This route follows the river Broye upstream, but with almost no changes in elevation whatsoever. Henniez is known for its mineral water, while the huge fortress complex in Lucens is an impressive sight. In the middle ages, its purpose was to maintain strategic control of the valley jointly with Moudon.
From Payerne railway station, the hike initially leads through the town. After a few minutes, the route passes the abbey church before leaving the houses behind. Open meadows and expansive farmland now dominate the scenery. The yellow-waymarked hiking trail winds through the gently rolling landscape, avoiding any significant climbs.
The roughly 17-kilometre route gains only around 100 metres in elevation overall. The trail therefore remains pleasantly even, with an engaging alternation between open countryside and small settlements. Only towards the end does it climb gently once more. The highest point is at the destination, at just over 500 metres.
In Curtilles, the houses draw closer again. The route passes the Café Fédéral and ends shortly afterwards in Moudon (Curtilles). From the endpoint, Curtilles, village bus stop is only a few minutes away. After around four hours, this quiet, easy-going hike with far-reaching views comes to an end.
