01/ Overview
The route
An urban walk through Unterstrass, past old fountains, housing estates and green oases. From Stampfenbachplatz, the route climbs to Irchelpark and continues via Buchegg to Schaffhauserplatz.
The urban walk through Unterstrass begins at Stampfenbachplatz, just a few steps from the stop. Following neighbourhood streets, the route climbs past Restaurant Drei Stuben to Beckenhof. Here stands the courtyard fountain dating from around 1790, which today is fed by spring water. Farther uphill, the route passes the Reformed Church of Unterstrass and reaches its highest point at around 490 m.
Between grand houses and cooperative housing estates, the route also tells the story of the area’s architecture and development. It passes directly by Bruder Klaus Church, which in 1933 became the world’s first parish church to be dedicated to Brother Klaus. Before long, the urban landscape opens up. At Allmendsee, the route reaches Irchelpark, then continues through green spaces towards Bucheggplatz.
From Buchegg, the route once again leads through the streets of Unterstrass. Shortly before the end, the «Im Birkenhof» fountain stands directly beside the route, followed by the final few steps to the Zürich, Schaffhauserplatz tram and bus stop.
