Aargauer Weg

The «Aargauer Weg» offers diversity: superb views over the foothills of the Jura and tranquil paths along the edges of river banks provide contrast with Habsburg castles, magnificent monasteries and mediaeval old towns.

In the Fricktal, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail sets off towards the Jura through a mosaic of woodland, open meadows and villages. From Wittnau, it climbs to the Salhöhe, whose pass offers sweeping views over the hills of the Aargau Jura. Shortly afterwards, near Wileberg, the route reaches its highest point at around 865 m.

The long descent leads down from the Jura heights into the Mittelland. At Wildegg, the route begins to follow the Bünz, mostly along pleasant hiking trails between riverbanks, fields and settlements. A notable stop along the way is Habsburg Castle on the ridge of Wülpelsberg, renowned as the ancestral seat of the Habsburg dynasty. From there, stretches of woodland alternate with built-up sections.

Towards the end, the hike continues via Bremgarten to the Flachsee, the southern section of the Reuss reservoir. The water brings a final tranquil change of scenery before the trail crosses open countryside to Muri. A little over 30 hours of pure hiking time should be allowed for the 105 kilometres and around 2,700 metres of ascent; dividing the route into several stages is advisable.
