01/ Overview
The route
Our walk today through the lush pastures and romantic Jura forests was once inhabited by dinosaurs 210 million years ago. Hike past the Alt-Tierstein ruins and along the ridge with a view across the Table Jura to the Black Forest. The trail leads to Wittnau via the Buschberg Chapel, a place of pilgrimage and power.
From the Frick bus stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads out of the village. Open meadows soon alternate with longer stretches of forest as the path steadily gains height. The first worthwhile stop is the Alt-Tierstein castle ruins, the remains of a hilltop castle in the municipality of Gipf-Oberfrick.
The trail then continues through the forest towards Tiersteinberg. Nearby, the hike reaches its highest point at around 750 metres. With the long ascent completed, the route now follows the wooded ridge in gentle ups and downs. Approaching Wittnau, the Lourdes Grotto lies directly beside the trail; shortly afterwards, the forest once again gives way to open countryside.
In the village, the route passes the Church of St. Martin and ends after around twelve kilometres at the Wittnau, Mitteldorf bus stop. Just over three hours should be allowed for the entire route, with around 440 metres of ascent.
