01/ Overview
The route
The trail leads up and down over the foothills of the Aargau Jura Park to Aarau, the town of beautiful gables. On the way there: woodlands, fields and several lookout points with views across the Swiss Plateau, the Alps and into Germany.
From the Wittnau, Mitteldorf bus stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads out of the village and up into the wooded Jura heights. The long initial climb requires stamina but rewards the effort with the Burgfluh viewpoint. Woodland and open meadows characterise the onward route to Salhöhe. The 787-metre pass connects Kienberg and Erlinsbach and also marks the border between the cantons of Aargau and Solothurn.
Beyond Salhöhe, the route climbs once more. Near Wileberg, it reaches its highest point at around 865 metres. Not far from Wasserflue, the long descent towards the Aare Valley begins. The trail remains mostly in the forest before the landscape gradually opens up towards Aarau.
Alpenzeiger offers one final notable viewpoint. The route then descends into the city and continues through residential areas to the destination. After 19 kilometres and just under six hours, the hike ends at Aarau railway station.
