01/ Overview

The route

The hiking trail leads almost continually through the riverside woodlands of the Rhein, which here gets pushed aside by the walls of moraine at the foothills of the Schwarzwald. Ruins of several Roman watch towers lie alongside the trail as well as the «Bürkli» earthworks at Riburg.

The approximately 20-kilometre hike to Rheinfelden begins at Stein-Säckingen railway station. At around 310 metres, the starting point is also the highest point; after that, the route remains remarkably gentle despite a few minor counter-climbs. The yellow-marked hiking trail alternates between built-up areas, open meadows and longer stretches of forest.

In Mumpf, the route passes close to the parish church of St. Martin, parts of which date back to the 10th century. Beyond Wallbach, the surroundings become quieter. In the forest, the Roman watchtower of Stelli stands directly beside the route; further on, more wooded sections and open terrain shape the trail. Rather than major climbs, this stage of just over five hours is characterised by steady ups and downs.

Towards the end, a viewpoint offers a view of the new Rheinfelden power station. The town then draws closer, and the route ends in Rheinfelden, just a few steps from the railway station.
