Aletsch Panoramaweg, Stage 2/3

A string of vantage points provides a natural spectacle: to the north, the view of the Aletsch Glacier in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. To the south the 4000-metre peaks of Valais. On the gentle descent to the Märjelensee lake, cotton grasses and small tarns contrast with the rock and ice.

The starting point is Riederalp, Riederfurka. The actual trailhead lies around 450 m from the nearest stop at Riederfurka. The mountain trail initially enters the Aletschwald forest. Open slopes soon replace the woodland, and around Moosfluh the rocky mountain landscape broadens out.

The route climbs steadily through pastures and increasingly barren terrain. Near Bettmerhorn, the hike reaches its highest point at just under 2,500 m. The long middle section follows mountain trails marked in white-red-white. Along the way, the route continues for around 1.5 kilometres without waymarking before rejoining the marked trail network.

The trail then continues through the open high-alpine landscape in a succession of ascents and descents. After around twelve kilometres and about four hours, the route ends at Märjelensee. There is no direct public transport connection at the destination; the nearest stop, Eggishorn, is just over 1.5 kilometres away.
