01/ Overview

The route

Following the narrow, deep gorges south of Brig, this trail leads through splendid pine forests and sheltered floodplains. High-level paths cut into the rock snake along the slope high above the Saltinaschlüocht gorge. Later, the trail runs along the banks of the Taferna which winds its way down between huge boulders.

From Brig railway station, the hike initially leads through the town. Stockalperschloss, built by Kaspar Stockalper between 1651 and 1671, stands almost directly on the route. The trail then leaves the settlement behind and climbs via Brei into the forest. The long ascent defines the day: over twelve kilometres, the route gains around 1,600 metres in elevation.

Above Schallberg, the scenery changes. The forest recedes, and open meadows and pastures line the route to the pass. For the most part, the route follows a yellow-marked hiking trail; only in the middle section does it become a white-red-white-marked mountain trail for a short stretch. Towards the end, the top of the pass draws closer, and shortly before the destination the route reaches its highest point at around 2,000 m. After a little over five hours, the hike ends at Simplonpass, near the Simplon Pass, Simplonblick bus stop. The pass links the Rhone Valley with Val Divedro and separates the Valais Alps from the Leone Group.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

    • Ried-Brig: Grund - Mittubäch - Taferna

      From 29 May 2025 – Until 30 Apr 2027

      From 30 Jan 2026 – Until 26 Dec 2026

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
