Aletsch Panoramaweg, Stage 3/3

The trail follows old Alpine paths down to the Burg, a rock massif of gneiss smoothed by glaciers. Against the backdrop of the Goms mountains, the Fiescher Glacier becomes clearly visible. The 160-metre-long Aspi-Titter suspension bridge points the way to the idyllic Goms mountain village of Bellwald.

The hike begins at Märjelensee, by the Gletscherstube Märjelen. The starting point is not served directly by public transport; the nearest stop, Eggishorn, is just over one and a half kilometres away. A short ascent at the outset leads to the highest point at around 2,370 metres. Shortly afterwards, the mountain path passes the Märjelen reservoir, between open pastures and rocky terrain.

The long descent then defines the character of the hike. For much of the way, the white-red-white marked path loses considerable elevation and crosses barren slopes before the landscape becomes greener. Sections of forest alternate with open terrain. After the lowest section, the route gains a little height once more and increasingly follows broader, yellow-marked hiking trails.

Towards the end, the trail reaches the first houses of Ried and passes the Muttergotteskapelle. From there, Bellwald is not far away. After nine kilometres and a little over three hours, the hike ends in the village, just a few steps from the upper station.
