Alpine Passes Trail, Stage 1/43

St. Moritz is where the world meets up, but Corviglia is where hikers get together: this is the start of the Alpine Passes Trail that traverses Switzerland. The first stage, which climbs over two passes – the Fuorcla Schlattain and the Suvretta – ends at the Jenatsch hut, the highest SAC hut in Graubünden.

The roughly five-hour mountain hike begins in Corviglia. From the outset, the white-red-white marked trail passes the small Lej Alv and climbs into increasingly barren, rocky terrain. The route crosses Fuorcla Schlattain to reach the Suvretta Pass. It then continues uphill, reaching its highest point at just under 3,000 metres near Fuorcla Suvretta.

Beyond the Fuorcla, the long descent into Val Bever begins. The rocky terrain gradually gives way to open pastures before the mountain trail climbs once more towards the end. After eleven kilometres and around 1,000 metres of ascent in total, the Jenatschhütte stands on its hill between Piz Picuogl and Piz Jenatsch. It is the highest SAC hut in Graubünden and a fitting destination for this high-alpine stage. The stage destination is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Lej da la Pêsch, is around four and a half kilometres away.
