Alpine Passes Trail, Stage 22/43

A steep ascent runs from the Turtmann Valley through the Meidtälli to the small Meidsee lake. From the Meid Pass there is an impressive view of the Bishorn and the Weisshorn. Close to the destination for this stage, at the historic Hotel Weisshorn, is the Planet Trail.

From the Gruben VS bus stop, the route leaves the small valley village behind and soon begins to climb steeply. Following the mountain trail marked in white-red-white, the meadows give way to open, increasingly rocky terrain. After the long ascent, the small Meidsee lies directly beside the route. Shortly afterwards, the path climbs to the Meidpass, the highest point of the hike at around 2'790 m. This historic packhorse pass links the Turtmanntal with the Val d’Anniviers.

Beyond the top of the pass, the long descent begins. The mountain trail crosses open slopes and barren terrain, while the rocky pass landscape gradually recedes into the distance. After a total of around eleven kilometres and just under five hours, the hike ends at Hotel Weisshorn. With approximately 1'150 metres of ascent, it requires a good level of fitness. The destination is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, St-Luc (Tignousa), is just under two kilometres away.
