01/ Overview
The route
On the second stage of the Swiss Tour Monte Rosa, spectacular views of the highest Swiss peaks await you. Above the Matter Valley, the path traverses Alpmatten and crosses deep gorges to the Europahütte hut, which towers high above Randa.
The starting point is just a few steps from the Grächen, Zentrum bus stop. At the church, the route leaves the village centre and continues via Erbji and Gasenried. Settlements, meadows and woodland initially shape the scenery. The hiking trail heads down the valley in a long series of ascents and descents before dropping to around 1,300 m near Herbriggen.
From there, the character of the route changes markedly. A mountain trail marked in white-red-white climbs steeply via Geisstrift and Bärgji, with open pastures gradually giving way to rockier terrain. The highest point, at around 2,340 m, comes shortly before the destination. From there, the trail descends gently to the Europahütte. A little over seven hours should be allowed for the 17 km route, which involves around 1,750 metres of ascent. The destination is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Randa, Bahnhof, is around 2 km away.
