Alpine Passes Trail, Stage 25/43

In contrast to the previous stage, this one goes in one direction only: downhill. From the Cabane des Becs de Bosson SAC hut, the trail of this short stage runs across the Pas de Lona and down to the Alp L'A Vieille. It then takes you over mountain meadows, into the forest, past the alpine pasture of Volovron, and to Evolène which is the destination for this stage.

The hike begins at the Cabane des Becs de Bosson, high above the valleys of Valais. The starting point is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Grimentz, Tsarva, is around two kilometres away. At just under 3,000 m, this is also the highest point of the route.

The route initially follows a white-red-white waymarked mountain path downhill through rocky terrain to the Pas de Lona. This 2,787 m packhorse pass links the Val d’Hérens with the Val d’Anniviers. Below the pass, the landscape becomes broader and greener. Open alpine pastures line the long descent via Plan Levri to L’A Vieille.

The route now mainly follows a yellow-waymarked hiking trail. Sections of forest add variety on the lower part, while Evolène draws closer with every step. After around eleven kilometres and just over three and a half hours, the hike ends at the Restaurant La Paix – La Grange in Evolène. From there, the Evolène, Village stop is just a few minutes’ walk away.
