Alpine Passes Trail, Stage 24/43

There is only one direction for this stage: uphill. The trail first zigzags from Grimentz to Bendolla, then it runs parallel to the chairlift for a short while as far as Les Crêts. It continues past Lac de Lona over the pass of the same name and then up to the highest hut on this route.

The long climb to the Cabane des Becs de Bosson begins at the Grimentz, télécabine stop. The hiking trail leaves the village and climbs via Bendolla. For the first two kilometres or so, it remains relatively wide; after that, it becomes a mountain trail. In total, around 1,500 metres of ascent must be tackled over ten kilometres.

As the route gains altitude, the open meadows recede and rocky terrain comes to dominate the landscape. The route crosses the Lona plateau, with views of Lac de Lona, which lies slightly off the trail. Situated at 2,640 m, the mountain lake is the largest of around 15 lakes on the plateau. The 2,787-metre Pas de Lona links the Val d’Anniviers with the Val d’Hérens.

From the pass, the path climbs steeply once more. The rocky towers of the Becs de Bosson draw closer before the Cabane is reached after just under five hours, at almost 3,000 m and also the highest point of the tour. The destination is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Grimentz Tsarva, is around 2 km away.
