01/ Overview
The route
From the pristine lake in narrow zigzag turns up to the Col du Bec d'Aigle. Highest point: the Col du Sarshlau, which offers little space between two mountain peaks. Steeply downhill, the destination is already in sight: the Mauvoisin reservoir, which, at 250 metres, boasts the highest arch dam in Europe.
The starting point at Cabane de Louvie is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Plamproz, is around one and a half kilometres away. At the very start, the white-red-white waymarked mountain path passes the Lac de Louvie reservoir. It climbs across open pastures and increasingly rocky terrain to Bec d’Aigle. The long ascent then continues to the highest point near Tête du Sarshlau, at around 2'620 m.
The route now consists mainly of descent. The mountain path winds down through an open, rocky mountain landscape as the barren heights gradually recede. Over the 11 km route, the ascents total around 900 metres and the descents 1'300 metres; just under five hours should be allowed. Towards the end, the path widens and reaches Mauvoisin. It passes Chapelle de Notre Dames des Neiges before continuing to Restaurant de Mauvoisin and, a few steps farther on, the bus stop where the hike ends.
