01/ Overview
The route
From La Chaux, the Chamois Path will take you to the heart of the Haut Val de Bagnes nature reserve. Along with meeting mountain goats, chamois and marmots, enjoy the spectacular views of the Combins massif glaciers. After crossing the Termin pass, you walk downward to the Louvie Lac and Fionnay.
The trail begins in open terrain at the La Chaux VS stop. After a short opening stretch on a broad hiking trail, a narrow mountain path takes over. It climbs steadily across barren slopes and through increasingly rocky terrain. Col Termin is reached after just over two hours. At around 2,650 m, it marks the highest point of the hike.
The long descent begins on the far side of the pass. The mountain path leads across open pastures to Lac de Louvie, an artificial mountain lake high above Fionnay. The route then loses elevation rapidly, once again alternating between grassy and rocky sections. Towards the end, the Fionnay balancing reservoir comes into view before the trail reaches the valley floor and the nearby Fionnay bus stop. Just under five hours should be allowed for the twelve kilometres, with around 700 metres of ascent and 1,450 metres of descent.
