01/ Overview
The route
The mountain trail leads through the narrow Schöllenen Gorge from Andermatt almost continuously downhill to Göschenen, with the Reuss far below and historic traces of traffic over the Gotthard.
From Andermatt railway station, the mountain hiking trail enters the Schöllenen Gorge. The route follows an old mule track heading south and recalls pre-modern travel, a customs post and the legends of the Schöllenen. After a short, barely perceptible ascent, it reaches its highest point at around 1,440 m; from there, it is almost entirely downhill.
The Teufelsbrücke soon takes centre stage, while the Reuss flows through the narrow gorge far below. The Suworow Monument adds another historical highlight. Parts of the trail run across avalanche galleries, with open slopes and steep gorge walls defining the scenery. Around halfway, a picnic area with barbecue facilities can be found at Geissenplatz. Those with time can also add a circular walk through the gorge.
Further down, the route leads to the Häderlisbrücke and reaches the first houses of Göschenen. After just under five kilometres and a little over an hour, the descent ends directly at Göschenen railway station.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
