01/ Overview
The route
An almost level circuit through the floodplain forest near Steinen. Information panels describe the river landscape, while at Aazopf the view opens out over the Lauerzersee.
From Steinen railway station, the Floodplain Trail initially leads out of the village. The yellow-waymarked hiking trail follows Aazopfweg towards the Steiner Aa and remains almost level. Along the way, information panels highlight the ecology of the floodplain and the diversity of its plants and woody vegetation.
The surroundings grow quiet in the floodplain forest. In places, the original course of the river can still be discerned between the trees. The route continues to Aazopf, the protected area around the mouth of the Steiner Aa. The Aazopf barbecue site offers views of the Lauerzersee, which lies between Vierwaldstättersee and Zugersee and, with a maximum depth of 14 metres, is one of Switzerland’s shallowest lakes.
The circuit then leads through open countryside and woodland back to Steinen. Over the distance of just under four kilometres, the total ascent amounts to only around 20 metres; even the highest point is at approximately 470 m. After a little over an hour, the Floodplain Trail ends back at Steinen railway station.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
