01/ Overview
The route
An airy summit traverse across the Rigi Hochflue: rock steps, scrambling sections and a panoramic ridge define this demanding route before the mountain trail descends steeply to Brunnen.
The Urmiberg cable car leads to the starting point at around 1,140 m. From the upper station, the trail climbs via Schwand to Gottertli. Woodland alternates with open pastures before the mountain ridge becomes rocky. The alpine route continues over Zilistock to the Rigi Hochflue. Its highest point stands at around 1,680 m and offers views across the lakes and mountains of Central Switzerland.
The summit traverse is a demanding alpine hike. One rock step is equipped with iron rungs and wire ropes, while further scrambling sections require sure-footedness and a head for heights. A rope or via ferrata set is recommended for these sections.
Beyond the summit, the long descent begins. The mountain trail heads down into the valley via Bärfallen, entering increasingly dense woodland. By the Bergrestaurant Timpel, a large part of the total descent of just over 1,300 metres has been completed. Farther down, the houses of Brunnen and Lake Lucerne come into view. After around five hours, the route ends at the lower station of the Urmiberg cable car, immediately beside the Brunnen, Seilbahn Urmiberg bus stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
