01/ Overview
The route
The Waldstätterweg leads around the touristic highlight of the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne). Explore the natural and cultural landscape with its historic sites, villages, lake shores and city on foot. Discover the heart of Central Switzerland anew.
From the Brunnen (See) stop, the 115-kilometre route initially follows the shore of Lake Lucerne to Gersau and Vitznau. Passing lakeside villages, open meadows and stretches of woodland, it continues via Greppen to Küssnacht am Rigi, where the Baroque parish church of St. Peter and Paul stands directly beside the route. At Schloss Meggenhorn, the route reaches the promontory separating Küssnachtersee from Luzernersee.
Beyond Luzern, the city gradually recedes. The route heads south via Kastanienbaum and through the Grämliswald, before the mountain path climbs to the Rengg. On the far side of the pass, an extended series of ascents and descents leads through meadows, woodland and villages to Stansstad. The Bürgenstock now rises above the lake, where the route reaches its highest point at around 1,080 metres.
The descent leads back to the lakeshore at Beckenried. Along the final stretch, woodland and open slopes alternate once more, with Lake Lucerne setting the direction. After a good 37 hours of walking time, the multi-day tour ends at the Rütli, just a few steps from the stop of the same name.
