01/ Overview
The route
A demanding ridge walk from Urmiberg to Rigi Scheidegg, continuing along a former railway line and the Felsenweg. Panoramic views, dramatic vistas down to Lake Lucerne and a vertical conglomerate cliff define the route.
The Brunnen–Urmiberg cable car carries hikers to the starting point on Urmiberg. The trail immediately climbs across open pastures and through woodland to Gottertli. A demanding section along the southern ridge of the Rigi follows before the route rejoins a wider hiking trail at Gätterlipass.
From Rigi Burggeist, the long, strenuous ascent leads to Rigi Scheidegg. Shortly after the chapel, the highest point is reached at around 1,645 m. Panoramic views extend across lakes and Alps, with the Gersau bay of Lake Lucerne to the south. Local specialities are served in the mountain inns.
Beyond Dosse, the gentler second section begins. Via Unterstetten, the trail follows sections of a former railway line. The Seeweg offers dramatic views down to Lake Lucerne before the Felsenweg runs close beneath a vertical conglomerate cliff. After the houses of Rigi First, only the final stretch to Rigi Kaltbad remains, where the Rigi Kaltbad-First stop lies just a few steps from the destination.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
