01/ Overview
The route
The hike with panoramic views starts with a descent from the Murtèl mountain station to Sils Maria. Passing between the Silsersee and Silvaplanersee lakes, the trail heads uphill again on the other side of the valley to Grevasalvas, the location of the 1978 Heidi film. On sweeping meadows and between rock formations, you reach the painter's home of Maloja.
The hike starts at its highest point, the Murtèl stop at around 2,700 metres. The mountain trail, marked white-red-white throughout, descends across open slopes. After the long descent, the route passes Alp Prasüra before continuing down into the Upper Engadin valley to Sils Maria.
In the village, the trail passes the listed Reformed church and soon reaches Lake Sils. Near the shore, the character of the hike changes: instead of descending further, the path climbs again through open meadows and pastures. Via Grevasalvas and Blaunca, it continues towards Maloja in a steady series of ascents and descents, at times skirting the edge of the forest.
After around 17 kilometres and a little over five hours, the hike ends in Maloja. The route involves a total ascent of approximately 420 metres and a long descent of around 1,300 metres. The Maloja, Posta stop is just a few minutes’ walk from the finishing point.
