01/ Overview
The route
A long, demanding descent from Murtèl through rocky terrain, across open slopes and to the tranquil Hahnensee. The mountain trail then leads down to Surlej in the Upper Engadine.
The hike starts at the Murtèl stop near Surlej, at just over 2,650 m and thus at the highest point of the route. The mountain trail initially crosses open terrain dotted with rocks. Short sections lie off the marked network; the white-red-white marked trail then resumes. The long descent begins with almost no uphill stretches.
After around six kilometres, the trail reaches Hahnensee, at just over 2,150 m, directly on its shore. At the Hahnensee mountain inn, the route continues down into the valley, between open slopes, forest and occasional rocky sections. Towards the end, Lake Silvaplana, the middle of the three Engadine lakes, lies nearby. The final metres lead past the bakery into the houses of Surlej and to the Surlej, Cristins stop.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
