01/ Overview
The route
A vigorous ascent leads from Niederrickenbach via the Bleikigrat to the panoramic summit of the Buochserhorn. The mountain trail then continues to Musenalp, with its alpine cheese dairy and own cable car.
The Dallenwil–Niederrickenbach cable car takes hikers to the starting point in Niederrickenbach. From the village, the mountain trail climbs through forest and across open alpine pastures to Alp Bleiki. The Bleikigrat marks the first prominent high point, immediately followed by the steepest section of the tour. Around 850 metres of ascent must be tackled along the route, which takes just over three hours.
Higher up, views open out over the lake and the surrounding peaks. At just over 1,800 m, the Buochserhorn is the highest point. Rising in isolation above the entrance to the Engelbergertal, it is the highest elevation located entirely within the canton of Nidwalden. From the summit, the route initially descends before traversing rocky, open terrain to Musenalp. There, an alpine café stands alongside the alp’s own cheese dairy; cheese-making and a tour of the facilities are available by prior arrangement. From Musenalp, the cable car returns to the valley.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
