01/ Overview

The route

This route will take you from Wolfenschiessen around and on top of the mount Wellenberg. The main characetistics of this trail is to see eight wonderful chapels and to be rewarded by the wonderful view of the Engelberg Valley.

From the Wolfenschiessen stop, the hiking trail leaves the village and climbs gradually towards Oberrickenbach. Along the way, it passes the Stutzkapelle Burgholz and a small reservoir. Open meadows alternate with shady stretches of forest as the valley floor recedes below.

From Fell, the path narrows and continues more steeply uphill as a mountain trail. In the Wellenberg area, after around seven kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at just over 1,240 m. The alp of the same name, farmed year-round, extends across the slopes of the mountain massif. The route then descends steadily via Bettelrüti to the chapel of St. Joder and continues to Grafenort.

In the final third, the terrain becomes gentler again. The hiking trail passes through a succession of small hamlets and across open ground back to Wolfenschiessen. After 18 kilometres, around 1,050 metres of ascent and just over six hours, the circular hike ends back at the stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
