01/ Overview

The route

The almost level Aawasser Trail follows the Engelberger Aa from Dallenwil to the Vierwaldstättersee. Natural surfaces, open fields and the covered Fadenbrücke characterise this leisurely valley walk to Buochs.

From Dallenwil railway station, the broad, family-friendly hiking trail leads towards Büren. At around 485 m, the highest point of the route is right at the starting point. From there, the trail follows the Engelberger Aa downstream with virtually no ascent, mostly over natural surfaces and through open farmland. Benches line the route, while Restaurant Eintracht in Oberdorf offers an opportunity for a break.

At Kreuzstrasse, the route follows the historic course of the river and then continues alongside the Aa. A particular highlight is the covered Fadenbrücke, adorned with the coats of arms of Nidwalden. The trail then crosses flat countryside to the Buochser Aawasseregg and the Vierwaldstättersee. Framed by pre-Alpine peaks, the lake lies at around 430 m and extends across several branching basins.

Romy's Seebeizli stands on the shore; from there, it is only a short distance to Buochs. The route ends near the Buochs (See) bus stop.

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
