01/ Overview
The route
From Chaumont, the geological Time Trail descends through extensive woodland to Neuchâtel. Wooden sculptures, the Rocher de l’Ermitage and a descent of around 600 metres define this short route.
The Time Trail begins at Chaumont, funiculaire station, at 1,087 m, which is also the highest point of the route. From here, the path leads downhill with virtually no uphill sections. It quickly loses altitude in the forest, with geology and wooden sculptures providing points of interest along the way. For long stretches, the route follows a waymarked hiking trail, interspersed with short sections outside the hiking trail network. Over just over five kilometres, it descends around 600 metres. The walking time is approximately one and a half hours.
After the long descent through the forest, the route passes close to the Rocher de l’Ermitage, which makes a good viewpoint. A little later, the path passes the Café du Jardin and, with the first houses, reaches the Chapelle de l’Ermitage. The forest now gives way to the built-up area of Neuchâtel. The final metres continue downhill to the endpoint in Neuchâtel, just under 100 m from the stop of the same name.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
