01/ Overview
The route
The circular route on the St. Petersinsel in Berner Seeland is a real feast for the eyes. Surrounded by the idyllic Bielersee lake, you go as you please on an easy path through this luxuriant nature reserve with many species of plants.
The approximately eleven-kilometre circuit begins at the Erlach, Stedtli bus stop. The trail passes between the houses of Erlach before emerging into open countryside and soon entering the forest. Lake Biel is never far away; together with Lake Murten and Lake Neuchâtel, it is one of the three large lakes at the foot of the Jura in the Three Lakes region.
The yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads to Chüngeliinsel. Forest characterises this quiet section of the route, interspersed with meadows and views of the lake. The differences in elevation are minimal: the highest point is at around 440 m. By the area around the Hotel-Restaurant St. Petersinsel, just over half the route has been completed.
The circuit then turns back towards Erlach. Alternating woodland and open areas accompany the level return route, and towards the end the first houses of the small town come into view. After just over two and a half hours, the hike ends back in Erlach, near the Stedtli bus stop.
