01/ Overview
The route
The changing atmosphere of lake, river and historic small towns are characteristic of the route. From Bielersee lake to the Aare banks and then a beautiful riverside hike to Büren. Over forested Bucheggberg and along the banks of the Emme to baroque Solothurn.
The long hike begins in Erlach and initially follows Lake Biel. The yellow-marked trail leads through the villages on the southern shore to Nidau, where it follows the Zihl for a short stretch. Settlements, open fields and sections of woodland then alternate. Near Meienried, the small Meienriedseeli lies directly on the route, which passes through Büren an der Aare shortly afterwards.
Beyond Büren, the hillier middle section begins. Gently rising and falling, the trail climbs to around 650 m near Horad, the highest point of the route. Via Mühledorf and Kyburg-Buchegg, it returns to the broad, predominantly agricultural plain. The hike then follows the Limpach as far as the Bätterkinden area. The moated Landshut Castle stands directly beside the trail.
After Biberist, the route follows the Emme Canal for several kilometres. The final section skirts the Widiwald and reaches Solothurn, where the Vorstadt stop is close to the destination. A little over 17 hours of walking time should be allowed for the 68 kilometres.
