01/ Overview
The route
The stage along the lakeshore to the bilingual town of Biel/Bienne offers flowering shrubs in spring, tranquil nature in autumn and numerous swimming opportunities in summer. Picturesque Erlach is the starting point.
The starting point is Erlach on Lake Biel. The nearest stop, Erlach, Stedtli, is around 300 m from the start of the route. The trail reaches the lakeshore almost immediately before continuing via Vinelz and beginning a gentle ascent near Feiberg. At around 550 m, this is the highest point of the hike.
The route then alternates between open meadows, short stretches of woodland and villages. The consistently waymarked hiking trail continues via Lüscherz towards Täuffelen and Sutz-Lattrigen. Time and again, it draws close to Lake Biel; in between, it crosses the flat cultivated landscape along the southern shore. There are several places to stop for refreshments directly along the route.
The surroundings become increasingly urban over the final few kilometres. In Nidau, the trail follows the Zihl for a short stretch before reaching the destination in Biel. The Biel/Bienne, Carterminal stop is just a few steps away. A little over five hours should be allowed for this easy 21 km hike; with only minor differences in elevation, the main challenge is its length.
