Sentier historique du Vully

History, vineyards, fine food: Vully has plenty of attractions. Its historical trail takes visitors on a journey to the very earliest days of French-speaking Switzerland, with superb panoramic views over the Three-Lakes Region, the Jura and the Alps as they walk through the smallest of Switzerland’s wine-growing estates.

The roughly three-and-a-half-hour circular hike starts at the Sugiez bus stop and leads through the village. It soon leaves the houses behind and climbs across open meadows on a yellow-marked hiking trail on Mont Vully. Lake Murten comes into view, although the route does not descend to the lakeshore.

At the Grottes des Roches Grises, the trail passes directly by the caves in the rock. Beyond the Restaurant Mont Vully, the route enters the Bois de l’Antenne. The ascent continues through alternating stretches of woodland and open terrain. On Mont Vully, the circuit reaches its highest point at around 650 m. From the ridge between Lake Murten, Lake Biel and Lake Neuchâtel, the panorama extends across the three lakes to the Jura and the Alps.

The return route descends through the forest and passes the Tour des Sarrasins. Meadows, woodland edges and the first houses of Sugiez then alternate. After around twelve kilometres and 440 metres of ascent, the circuit closes back at the bus stop.
