01/ Overview
The route
Leisurely over the rolling hills of the Fribourg Mittelland. Shady forest sections interchange with open asphalted village sections. The confluence of the Saane and Sense rivers is a near-to-nature experience.
The hike begins at Murten railway station and leaves the small town along the waymarked hiking trail. At first, the route follows the Mühlebach stream. Open fields, meadows and small settlements soon begin to alternate. After Münchenwiler, the trail enters the Birchewald.
The tranquil heart of the walk is the Galmwald. Beneath the leafy canopy, the trail continues to climb gently, reaching its highest point near Aderahubel at around 590 m. It then leads through woodland and across open farmland towards Liebistorf. Gentle gradients and the constant interplay of clearings and woodland characterise this long section.
Towards the end, Laupen draws closer. Schloss Laupen stands above the small town, a medieval fortification dating from the 12th century and a landmark at the confluence of the Sense and Saane. After a total of 15 kilometres and just under four hours, the hike ends in Laupen. The railway station is only a few steps from the finish.
