Chemin du Jura bernois, Stage 3/4

The high-altitude hike across the Montagne du Droit leads across high Jura pastures and next to huge spruce trees with a view of the Chasseral. Champ Meusel, the largest surviving site of a meteorite impact in Switzerland, lies directly beneath solar and wind turbines that power thousands of homes.

From Tramelan railway station, the hiking trail leaves the village and climbs to the open Jura uplands. Meadows and pastures dominate the landscape, interspersed with stretches of woodland and scattered farms. Via Prés Vannés, the trail reaches Buvette Chalet-Neuf, which lies directly on the route.

The route then heads west along the elongated ridge of the Montagne du Droit. Also known as Sonnenberg among German-speaking Mennonites, the ridge extends for around 25 kilometres through the Bernese Jura. At the Col du Mont Crosin, the trail crosses the pass and continues its steady succession of climbs and descents between pastureland and forest.

In the final third, the trail climbs once more. Near Mont Soleil, the hike reaches its highest point at around 1,290 metres. This Jura summit lies north of St-Imier; the final descent begins here amid clearings and woodland. After 15 kilometres and just over four hours, the route ends at Mont-Soleil station, where the funicular descends to St-Imier.
