01/ Overview
The route
The Eigenthal valley lies at the northern foot of the Pilatus, not quite 15 kilometres south-west of Lucerne. Its popularity in winter is due to two factors: it is generally fog-free, and it boasts cross-country skiing trails.
From the Eigenthal, Talboden bus stop, a short approach leads to the start of the six-kilometre cross-country ski trail. It initially runs along the valley floor before gently gaining height across open meadows. After around one and a half kilometres, it reaches its highest point at just over 1,000 m.
The trail then sweeps in a wide arc across open terrain and past wet meadows. The elevation differences remain moderate, totalling around 90 metres, but the route descends steadily to its lowest point shortly before Eigenthal. Here, the village houses draw closer, while the chapel of St. Maria stands slightly away from the route.
Towards the end, the trail climbs gently once more and passes the LindenstĂĽbli. Shortly afterwards, the circuit closes back at the starting point in Schwarzenberg, Eigenthal, near the Talboden bus stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
